Instructions

We are required to utilize and apply the design principles they have learnt to date in order to express a location of our choice.

Process of Project 2: Sense of Place

Brief Recap
In this project, we need to use the design principles that we've learnt to visualize and express a location of our choice. The location chosen must include the design principles to capture the social and environmental aspects which requires us to explore the outside world and observe our surroundings.

Visual References

Fig 1.0 by bạn đã bật đèn

Fig 1.1 Skyline by GUWEIZ

Fig 1.2 by Ximena Pinargote

By looking at the visual reference, it is not difficult to guess the theme that I'm going for is related to high places, balcony/window at night time. When I think about sense of place, I think about somewhere quiet and have a nice view. Therefore, night time is the most suitable since it is a time where everyone are resting and there wasn't a lot of noises going around. When thinking about nice view, I think about looking out the window/ balcony where I don't have to actually get myself outside of my room and can directly look out into the world.

Idea exploration, description

Fig 2.1 Sketch

In the first sketch, I thought about drawing lots of building during the night time. I wanted to emphasis the purple apartment by giving it a different colour or maybe add a person viewing out from the balcony.

Fig 2.2 Sketch

The second sketch is a warm view looking out from the window. I thought about creating contrast by drawing a black cat sitting on the window while looking out at a white cat from another building. I could also use repetition principle to create a lot of stars to make the sky look less empty.

Fig 2.3 Sketch Progress

After listening to the lecturer's advice I made the purple apartment closer and bigger so that it can catch the attention of the viewer more easily. I also added fading yellow colour to represent the night time city where there's street lights and car beam everywhere making the lower part of the drawing bright.

Fig 2.4 Sketch Progress

Since I still couldn't decide which design I should go for, I also updated my second design by adding the human figure and night sky just to compare which design would look better.

Fig 2.5 Sketch Progress

For the second design, I came up with two different posture for the figure just to see which one would be more fitting.

Fig 2.6 Sketch Progress

In the end, I chose the second design and second figure to work on as my final design. After listening to the advice given. I decided to sketch out the head and make it look towards the moon. To show that the figure is enjoying the view from the window.

Fig 2.7 Attempt Sketch For Hair

I tried to sketch out the hair to make it look good. I tried to make it look realistic by following the hair physic.

Fig 2.8 Colorized Human Figure

This is what the human figure looks like after adding in colours. I tried to highlight the hair and face due to the reflection of light from the moon. I also tried to make the moon and stars glow. Final Outcome

Fig 3.1 Final Outcome for Sense of Place

In this assignment, I wanted to feature a place that I like to stay. The night view and silent night always cheer me up and make me feel relax. I enjoy spending my time alone staring out to the world around me. It makes me feel safe and secure knowing that I can still connect myself to the world when I'm in my room.

Feedbacks

Week 8
Bring the building closer to focus on the emphasis on first design. For the second design, try to add a human figure lying by the window to make it look less empty and more interesting.

Week 9
Human figure #2 looks better and I should pay attention on how I display the posture of the human figure.

Week 10
The human figure looks good but try to make the human figure look out at the sky instead of staring straight ahead.

Reflection

Week 8
This week is Independent learning week, I wasn't sure what should I do for my design so I went on Pinterest to look for inspiration and visual references. I was able to discover a lot of ideas and I was able to start my sketches with the help of visual references.

Week 9
After listening to the feedbacks, it helped me a lot and I was able to improve my design.  And also to finally decide which design to go with.

Week 10
After showing my work one last time in class, I was able to finalize my design and add in all the necessary changes upon receiving feedbacks from the lecturer.
