Process of Project 1: Self-Portrait

Brief Recap

On the first week, we were briefed about the new project which required us to make a mind map about ourselves and we have to make a self portrait while applying the design principles that we've studied over the past few weeks into the self portrait. Therefore, we will have to study about which features that best represent us into the self portrait.

Visual References

For this project, I wanted to create a self portrait that represent me the most and show who I am as soon as they see the portrait.

Mind map

This is the mind map of myself. I only added things that I thought would be important when someone wants to get to know me.

Idea Exploration And Description

As shown on the references, I am an introverted person who likes to be alone in my room doing my own things. But it does not mean I don't socialize at all because I do text and call my friends and family while I'm enjoying my alone time. So I wanted to add that on to my final design too.

For this design I did a rough sketch about the same thing but this time the main focus is gaming and me being introverted. In this design, I am laying down while being surrounded by game consoles.

Process

After some consideration, I still prefer the first design so I proceed with it. I did some coloring for the drawing. I wanted to make it look like I'm in the dark toned room and there are lights coming out from the monitors to create contrast.

After listening to the lecturer's feedback, which is to add some futuristic telecommunication themed background, I decided to add in a lined background to create that kind of visual which also help to show movement for the design.

I also added in the screen for floating window to show the "me" in the design is interacting with others through discord and talking to them through voice call and video call. I will also fill in the other windows with screen in different websites and application such as comics web, Sportify and YouTube whereas showing even when I'm by myself I still get to connect to the outside world and enjoy a lot of things.

Final Design

This is what I came out with as my final design. I'm quite satisfied with it as it does reminds me of myself when I look at this. I also asked a few friends if it does remind them of me and I had positive answer which I was glad to hear.

Feedbacks

Week 5
In this week, miss Yip gave me feedback about my mind map and she gave me advice about which elements I could use from the mind map for my self portrait.

Week 6
After showing my sketches for my self portrait, I was given advice to explore more and add more elements so that it would not look too simple.

Week 7
I added more elements for my sketch this week and miss was satisfied with my work. She also gave me a suggestion regarding the background in which I found it very useful. The suggestion that I was given was to add a some futuristic telecommunication looking to make my drawing show more visual movement.

Weekly Reflections

Week 4
After submitting our 5 exercises, miss Yip briefed us about our first project which is to make a self portrait while using the design principles that we learned from our exercises. We were instructed to do make a mind map about ourselves and present it the week after.

Week 5
During class, each of us presented and receive feedback on our mind maps about ourselves. It was actually quite a new experience for me as this is my first time actually having to think about what my likes, dislikes, interests and etc. As I was doing the mind map, I realized that I haven't really been focusing on myself that much so I enjoyed discovering myself again through this process.

Week 6
On this week, we show miss the sketches that we came out with and explain the ideas and meaning behind the ideas and the design we came out with. After receiving feedback individually, we are asked to proceed with our work while following the advices that we were given.

Week 7
This is the week of the submission so we only needed to finish the blog and self portrait in time. I showed my work to miss Yip to get her final advice and I moved on to finalize the whole project. I am satisfied with how my work turned out so I hope the others will like what I came out with too.
